Wow!! Another year already?

advertisement

Well I can't believe it but I have somehow survived yet another year. Even with the kids seemingly plotting to give me a heart attack on a near minute by minute basis I have once more reached the day of my birth. One thing I've always wondered about birthdays is why do we give presents to the birthday boy/girl? I've often thought that maybe instead the birthday boy/girl should be giving presents to their mother for keeping them safe for another whole year.

Here's a look at some of the things that have happened on this day in history:

1832 - Joseph Smith, III, was born. He was the first president of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was also the son of Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism.

1860 - Abraham Lincoln was elected to be the sixteenth president of the United States.

1861 - Jefferson Davis was elected as the president of the Confederacy in the U.S.

1861 - The inventor of basketball, James Naismith, was born.

1869 - The first official intercollegiate football game was played in New Brunswick, NJ.

1913 - Mohandas K. Gandhi was arrested as he led a march of Indian miners in South Africa.

1923 - Jacob Schick was granted a patent for the electric shaver.

1935 - Edwin H. Armstrong announced his development of FM broadcasting.

1952 - The first hydrogen bomb was exploded at Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.

1956 Suez Canal Allies Take Control

These people were also born this day:

Charles Henry Dow 1851
John Philip Sousa 1854
Ignacy Jan Paderewski 1860
James Naismith 1861
Walter Perry Johnson 1887
Ole (John Sigvard) Olsen 1892
James Jones 1921
Martin Pavelich 1927
Mike Nichols 1931
Stonewall Jackson 1932
Eugene Pitt (The Jive Five) 1937
P.J. Proby 1938
Guy Clark 1941
Doug Sahm (Sir Douglas Quintet, Texas Tornados) 1941
Mike Clifford 1943
Sally Field 1946
Glenn Frey (Eagles) 1948
Maria Shriver 1955
Lance Kerwin 1960
Lori Singer 1961
Paul Brindley (Sundays) 1963
Corey Glover (Living Colour) 1964
Peter DeLuise 1966
Kelly Rutherford 1968
Ethan Hawke 1970
Thandie Newton 1972
Rebecca Romijn Stamos 1972
Nicole Dubuc 1978
Mercedes Kastner 1989

Among other things I also share my birthday with my nephew. What can I say as I look back on the last 39 years? Well I can say it's been a heck of a ride and as long as the kids don't get organized I just might see another birthday..lol. Do you have anything special planned you might ask, Actually no I generally keep my birthday in the low key department although next year might be a different story altogether. One thing I plan on doing in the up coming year is to continue writing on the vine and hopefully I have enough interesting stories to keep ya'll reading and in stitches over the next year.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

lol...oh I know I'm not really looking forward to next year though...not sure what sick, twisted, evil thing my wife might be planning for that one. Sorry to hear about your mom you have our sincerest condolences and we'll be keeping ya'll in our prayers. I think that's a fine tradition and would be honored to take it up in your stead.

You have my sincere condolences on the passing of your mother. You can still keep the tradition by going to her gravesite and putting a rose there by her headstone.

It is said that every German and their dog can be found in a gasthaus after 5pm every day. It is then that birthday person must buy for everyone!

Things you are almost as old as:

E-mail

LCDs

Microprocessors

Pocket Calculators

Floppy Disks

Leaf Blowers

All of which I used this weekend! (Except for the floppy disk, of course)

It appears(in your many, many years on this Earth) that you have managed to go the way of the blower and avoid the way of the floppy, so good for you.

Love reading your stuff.
