I had gotten settled into my bag as was drifting off when all of a sudden my wife sat bolt up right and started shaking me back awake. I, grumbled that I was awake and that she could stop with the earthquake impersonation. She stopped shaking me and asked me, in a hushed voice, "Did I hear someone mention bears?"
I sighed and told her that I had hoped she wouldn't hear about that but yeah there was a family of black bears, 5 in total, in the area and that I had see one of them walking on the road towards the upper part of the lake. At this point my wife went into hyper listening mode and was starting to get herself all worked up. I started heading off this freight train by explaining that it was very unlikely we would have a run in tonight. Her head whipped around fast enough to make my neck hurt and asked me how I could be so sure of that. I told her that I had made sure our food was stored properly and that our trash had either been burned or disposed of in the bear proof trashcans. I then went on to remind her of all the people around us, most of whom were still awake and partying, as well as the fact that I'd heard that the fish and wildlife person had came through to try and get the bears to move along to better foraging grounds.
While she was still worried she started calming down again, especially when I told her that we'd have about as good a chance of getting attacked by a bear as we did of the lake suddenly rising and flooding us out, especially since we didn't have any food or anything else that might attract the bears. It was also at this point that I pointed out where the guns were and that she had bear spray under her pillow. This calmed her down to a more normal level and even allowed her to joke about it a little. After a few more minutes she settled back into her bag and fell asleep while I laid back wondering if something else might come up. A few minutes later I realized that she was good and asleep so I let myself drift off again.
I was awoken a couple of hours later thanks to a foot landing on hand. Oh yeah that was a great way to wake up but it happens. After I jerked my injured hand away from the offending foot I looked up to see my wife trying to climb back into bed. I asked her what was going on and she replied that she had just taken the second child to the bathroom. If I wasn't awake before I was now, especially when I noticed that she was still holding the shotgun. I looked at her and asked if there was any problems and she said that other than having to walk to the port a john with the little one that nothing went wrong. She put the shotgun back where I had placed it and climbed back into the bag. It was then that I realized she was shivering. I asked her about it and she told me that it had gotten rather cold outside, especially with the breeze coming off the lake. I told her to keep her clothes on and to wrap up as tightly as she could in the bag and she'd be warm and toasty in no time.
She grunted something about never feeling her butt again but did do as I had suggested. It wasn't long before sleep claimed her once more. I looked around to make sure everything was still where it should be and did a double take at the baby because I thought I saw the blankets slipping off of her. It was just my imagination though as the baby was nicely wrapped up good and toasty. At that I laid my head back down to get a little more sleep, all the while keeping an ear open....just in case.
Sleeping in a tent can also be very nerve-wracking-- as you so well describe!
All is well so far, I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Great article, frostyone!
I can't really blame her, although I love to see them. :-)
I'm so glad that you-all had fun. Every step of the way, I remind myself that y'all are aok and that you had fun!
This is a good kind of story for that!
Hmmm...seems to me more foreshadowing of a bear encounter. How far were you from the bathrooms? Seems like it would be somewhat difficult to load a shotgun while holding a baby if she did encounter a bear.
it would be somewhat difficult to load a shotgun while holding a baby
That's why I keep mine loaded
I can already tell the arguement for an RV is already working. No leaving to use the midnight potty, warmer, bears have problems getting inside....I could go on. *smile*
I think the worm may be turning.
After going to bed so late, I bet you really didn't get much sleep huh?
I can already tell the arguement for an RV is already working. ...I think the worm may be turning.
Until just now, I was clueless...LOL
Humm - all is going according to plan, huh frosty? Did she figure it out or did you ever tell her? You're a cold frosty!
In my case, the shoe was on the other foot, I had to convince the hubby! But after a couple of trips in the summer and we had air conditioning, he wasn't too hard to convince. :-)
Now, he wouldn't have it any other way! :-) Especially for our New Year's Eve camping trip! (It gets pretty cold here on New Year's Eve! He is very grateful for the heat.)
Hope you had a happy day, frostyone.
Home with your family-- I understand. :-)
I went for the "pop-up" trailer to enhance all of our family camping adventures.
It has AC, heat, hot water, comfy beds(above the dew level), and a locking door; but at the same time leaves you open to the exciting possibility of a mauling.
Best of both worlds.
We had a popup when I was a kid, and had LOTS of fun in it!
One time, we were camping at Mammoth Cave National Park and a huge deer walked up to the 'plate glass' window and looked in at us. We were eating breakfast and just froze, to keep from scaring him-- he was beautiful!
They are great-- we certainly loved ours! And, anymore, they have so many nice features.
Take care, Stinkweed Pete!
The pop-up camper is great Dowser.
I'd like to say that me, my wife, and my kids have seen some beautiful wildlife just outside of our plastic windows, but alas, the most exotic wildlife we've seen thus far was a very intoxicated man named Carl, who didn't quite know where he was.
We only had to walk him over four or five camp sites before we found his owners.
Even so, he probably should have been wearing tags or something.
Stinkweed, this was in the late fall, and no one was there. We always camped when no one else would-- and used little heaters, etc. Animals come around more when there are fewer people. I loved our popup!
The only thing that, as an adult, I wouldn't like was setting it up to load it, taking it down, setting it up to camp, taking it down, setting it up to unload it, and taking it down. Mama did the house stuff, and I loaded the camper, when I was a kid. We never had enough 'stuff' to just leave it out there. So, all the bedding had to come in, etc.
The way we're set up now, I am able to leave all of our stuff in our camper and we just pack a bag to go. We shop when we get there. :-)
