Red on the camel
Birthday girl on her ride
I love camels
Hey dad look at me
now this is what I call a ride
smells different than I thought
kind of high up too
I slept in this morning. I guess my wife decided to let me sleep as long as I wanted because I have to go back to work tonight. Anyway when I got up I knew I needed to take the van in for an oil change. I decided that I'd run a few errands since I was already going to be out and about. After getting the oil changed and the tires rotated I headed down to the local video store to turn in the movies I'd rented the day before and saw a sight I never thought I'd see out here.
There was a guy walking around with a camel. I had to stop and take a closer look to make sure I was seeing what I thought I was seeing. Sure enough it was a camel and I also noticed that the camel had a kid on its back. I sat watching the kid ride the camel for a minute until they arrived back at some stairs that I'd not noticed until now.
It was then that I watched the kid get off the camel and another kid get on. That's when it dawned on me that the guy was giving people camel rides. I glanced at the clock and saw it was getting kind of late in the afternoon and decided to head straight home and grab the family for a camel ride. I had to hurry because I had no idea how long the camel would be giving rides and didn't want the kids to miss out on it.
As soon as I pulled into the driveway I dashed into the house and told everyone to hop in the car that we had to go somewhere. It took a few minutes to get everyone ready and in the car, all the while they were asking what we were doing and where we were going. I wouldn't tell them, I wanted it to be a surprise. After what seemed like forever everyone was loaded in the car and we were off. My wife asked me a couple of time what we were doing but soon gave up as I wasn't telling.
It wasn't long before we arrived at the parking lot and I was pulling into a parking spot. As we were getting out of the van the camel came into view and I turned and told the kids that they would get to ride it if we hurried over and got into line. So we all hurried over to the end of the line and proceeded to wait all the while watching other kids take their turns riding the camel. It was a longer wait than I had thought it would be but in the end it was worth it to me.
About the time Red was getting fussy it was time for our kids to get on the camel. Since Red was all impatient we had her go first. She got on the camel with some help from mom and after strapping in they were off. She was having a ball on the camel and about the time she was really getting into it the ride was over and it was time for yesterday's birthday girl to get on. All the while I was on the other side of the camel taking pictures.
While we were waiting for the ride it seemed like it took forever but once it was ride time it seemed to just fly by. The second child was really excited to be riding the camel and could've stayed on it all day but alas the ride was soon over and it was time for the boy to get strapped in. He's only 2 so we didn't know how he would react but he took to it like a duck to water. Not only did he not have a fit about getting on the thing he didn't want to get off when the ride was over. Since he's still so small though it was easy to over ride his wishes and get him off the camel once his ride was over. Then it was time for the oldest to get a ride. She didn't really want to ride the camel but since there wasn't any horses around to ride she gamely climbed a bored.
After she had her ride we decided to head for home and grab some dinner, leftovers again. If we'd had more time I might have taken a ride on the thing but then again I might have hurt it by possibly being too big. Anyway I just knew I had to share this with ya'll as soon as I could so I hope you enjoy the pictures and have a great weekend.
Frosty, you are one very cool dad! What a fun childhood you're kids are having! Those cutie pies look to be having a very fun adventure.
Thanks so much for sharing this. What a hoot!
"What did you do today?"
"I rode a camel, how about you?"
Great story pal. I want a turn next. LOL
I agree with Sydney! Awesome Dad! And be sure to tell your kids I said that!
Too many people methinks today would have just blown it off, ah, won't get back in time, cost's too much, smelly creatures, whatever. But the kids got a treat, and something they'll be able to share all their lives. Too cool, frosty!
(*pinkgrins*!)
ps - save this entire article when the day arrives one or all of them are up in their rooms plotting your imminent demise because you're being that other Dad who won't let them have or do something!
(*biggerpinkgrins*!)
and do elephant rides next. I rode one once and loved it.
Camels, yes, a number of times, but I've never ridden an elephant! I've always wanted to! Someday, someday......
(*pinkgrins*!)
I've been very, very, close to a whole bunch of them, once a year for about ten years, just never had a chance to get on one! I worked part time at a big arena, and once a year it was the circus was in town! Dodging acts and animals and "land mines" everywhere for almost two weeks, and that was just to get into the building!
(*pinkgrins*!)
What FUN! Good for you that you were able to take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Three cheers for the frosty family!
What sweet little munchkins you have--
((((((((((frosty, Mrs. frosty, and the sweet little snowballs))))))))))))
I think Dowser and a lot of others said it... That was incredibly cool of you. I bet you won't get any arguments next time you tell the kiddos to jump in the car without telling them why. LOL
I know they had a blast. It looks like it too. They look so excited.
Determined to keep them guessing. LOL
You do realize that camels are used as pack animals in the desert, right? So, you would not be likely to hurt the camel should you have gotten on it. Now, I'm glad they all had fun. But, next time, take a ride...it'd be worth it.
You are hereby renamed "Adventure Dad". What a totally cool story. Keep 'em coming!
Will you adopt me so I can ride a camel too? 'smiles'
What fun for the kids!!!!
even the oldest though getting her to admit that would be like pulling hens teeth
Yep - being the oldest, we have a reputation to uphold! LOL
If you have a back yard - I can just pitch a tent! Thank you for the long distance adoption! LOL
:>)
LOL - I've got a queen air mattress that will work just fine.
Hubby and I went camping and razor clamming back in March. Very interesting trip! I just wish I had gotten pics. It would have made a pretty good story.
Nothing better than looking for a clam show in the sand and digging faster then the clam can bury itself in the sand. Many clams have slipped away as your fingers have touched the top of their shells! LOL
What a cool deal! I would have loved to ride that camel when I was a kid, actually I would love to do it even now! I love the pictures and I bet those kids are still talking about that camel.
Way to go Dad!
Reminds me of what its like to be a kid again.
Way Cool Frosty!
Oh Frosty! Truly too cool for words! What excitement that must have caused! Once, when two of my kids were little (maybe 8 and 10), there was a man with a Giant Python. He was letting people hold it! Gads, it weighed about 40 pounds! Anyway, they got their pictures taken too. They are both adults now, and still talk about it! That was a real gift you gave your children, definitely a memory to treasure. :-)
kewl
I'll tell you something I did for my daughter that went over really big. We had a make-up party. It was a kit I saw in the store. We took down every big mirror in the house and lined them all up in the living room and each girl got her little make-up kit. They had a blast! Then I allowed each girl to put something on my face. They drew all sorts of weird alien things on me and just about peed their pants laughing about it.
My daughter still talks about when she painted my husband's toenails 6 years old. Kids have fun doing the simplest things, but taking a camel ride kicks a**!! I've learned to always be prepared, so I keep a small camera in my purse at all times. That way if I'm ever out running errands and see a camel I can record the memories.
They put all kinds of crazy stuff on my face and then took pictures of it. They just couldn't believe I was letting them do that and laughed hysterically the whole time. It was a fun little party.
So, frosty, when are we going to see those pics? <EG>
Me? Never...but the rabbit on the other hand...<G>
Come on frosty. We won't tell. Scouts honor. <devilish grin> I bet they are funny as hell.
frosty,
Be careful...
It's got long, sharp...it can jump this...LOOK AT THE BONES! <G>
I just thought of another really good one to tell you about. For my daughter's 8th birthday, we did a french restaurant. We had a wood-burned sign on the front door that said "Chez Kellye" and I was the chef (apron and hat) and my husband was dressed up in a suit and was the waiter. The girls got all dressed up. I did an actual menu with several different choices of everything they could choose from. We did a non-alc wine in the champagne bucket and used the good dishes and wine glasses. They were in heaven! Then we set up a disco ball in the living room and turned it into a disco so they could dance. That is one of my most fun memories of her as a child.
Reading this story was a blast! Haaaa ha ha ha ha!
And I bet that this Camel day will feed your kids imagination for years, and live forever in the annals of your family. What a precious memory that is! You did very well to recognize the opportunity and seize the moment.
Fantastic!
Great stuff, and I'm sure your kids loved it.
but then again I might have hurt it by possibly being too big.
Dude, it's a camel.
Didn't want to miss out on the butt kissing fest
Who pissed in your corn flakes?
Nan, were you being sarcastic or did you mean to be a party-pooper?
Speaking of camels
For the man that has twins, here is a stretch version: The three humps camel.
Well that was really cool, Karl. You find the neatest pictures! :-)
The racing camels... This is the best I could find... Racier than the limo model.
So cool. Brought back memories of going to Marine World in Redwood City, CA as a kid and getting to ride the camels and elephants.
I did :)
This is why I search for your vines
frosty - Your stories always make me laugh and brighten my day. We definitely need more of your stories. I always relate your stories to my husband and daughter to make them smile, although I'm sure I don't relay them nearly as well. So, keep bringing us wonderful stories of your beautiful family. We are eating them up!
Amen, dear frosty! There is good news, too! Sometimes, we just have to look harder for it!
You never know what you will come up with next...Very cute story. I can imagine the raised eyebrows a few years from now when your kids are re-living memories from their childhood. "Remember the day dad took us to ride a camel"... :o) Thanks for sharing
Sorry it took me so long to get here, Frosty. Someone has to make a late entrance to the party, right?
What a totally off the wall and cool thing for your kids to get to do. A camel in Clovis is not something I'd have expected to see! LOL
