A couple of weeks ago my wife told me that she was ready to enlarge the family, I was caught completely off guard as up till then I’d thought our family was plenty big enough. Before I could question her on it she was out the door and off to work leaving me at home with the kids and wondering exactly what the heck she’d been drinking that morning.
By the time she got home that night I’d completely forgotten about her announcement that morning due to dealing with a couple of sick kids as well as my normal routine of running all over creation and trying to keep the house somewhat clean. Around dinner time she asked me what I thought of what she had said that morning to which I gave her my confused look and told her I had no idea what she was talking about. She laughed and said she couldn’t believe that I’d forgotten about wanting to add to the family. As soon as the words left her lips it all came back to me and I had to ask her just what on God’s green earth she was thinking.
She said that she thought we could use a few more pattering little feet around the house. I felt entirely different and proceeded to tell her just that. I was looking forward to having all the kids’ potty trained and being able to quit buying the diapers and such, not to mention I really wasn’t looking forward to the crying and such every two hours. After stating my case she just said “Fine”, which is really code for “it aint fine but I’m not going to argue with you I’m just going to do what I want” and left it at that.
Well during the course of the next two weeks I’d completely forgotten about our “discussion” and since she never said another word about it she made it really easy to forget. Then yesterday comes along and I noticed my wife in a happier mood than normal and was wondering what was up but since things around the house were a bit hectic I didn’t get the chance to ask her about it until after lunch. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway since all she said was “Oh, nothing” and would change the subject.
About 2:30 the doorbell rang and my wife practically jumped out of her skin to get to the door. I was playing with the little ones so I didn’t pay any attention to who was at the door or what was being said until all of a sudden a carrier was plopped into my line of sight. I jumped a little at the sight of the carrier 3 inches from my face and then I heard it….the soft meowing that only kittens can make. It was then that she told me this was the type of addition she had meant and I needed to help her pick out a kitten. Well I know a losing battle when I see one so I didn’t even bother protesting or pointing out that we already have a cat and a couple of turtles as I know when I’m facing a fight I just can’t win. She told me that a lady she works with has a stray that like having kittens on her front porch and was trying to find a good home for them but that we’d get first pick.
She took the kittens out of the carrier and let them ramble around the living room while the kids were falling all over themselves and each other to play with them. For myself I tried to extract myself from the fray but it just wasn’t happening especially with the boy sitting on my back trying to pet one of the kittens. I finally gave up and just laid there on the floor watching the kids and kittens run around while my wife tried to figure out which one she liked the best. It didn’t take her long to find a girl she liked that was black with white feet and a white stripe going from the top of her head to her nose. While this was going on a little all black boy kitten came over to me and started batting at my finger a bit. My wife took the girl and was sitting on the couch loving on her while the kids were still chasing the others around the living room. After a bit she showed me the one she wanted and asked me what I thought. By then I’d finally gotten off the floor and was sitting in the recliner with the boy kitten falling asleep on my shoulder and I looked over at her and said that I guess we’d have a couple of new additions after all. Soon thereafter the lady came back to the house and we put the kittens back in the carrier. She was surprised and delighted that we were going to keep two of them and when she asked me why I’d decided on two instead of one I just pointed to the one on my shoulder and said I couldn’t bear to wake him up.
